About the Outdoor Journey
The Outdoor Journey is dedicated to multisport athletes who seek the meaning of life through endurance events. This Journey is about embracing that passionate dance with our ego, fears, and courage.
Yet, since most of us have to work for a living, and have to fit our training around our “real” lives, you will not see much space dedicated to the professionals. We will learn from them, but we will also spend more time learning about the average Joe and Jane Lunchbucket and how they successfully, or perhaps not so successfully, incorporate the multisport lifestyle into their day-to-day existence, work and family.
With few exceptions, you will not find much about ultra endurance events here. There are no shortage of Ironman-distance and super-duper distance online resources for you to peruse. For the moment, I will focus on events lasting under four hours.
About the Author
Readers who have been around for a bit know me as Hak. Although many of you may think it refers to my challenged writing style (and you’re probably more correct than not), it’s actually a shortened version of a training name I was given a long, long time ago: Hakado Ru.
Since that name no small significance to my multisport personality, it’s what I’ll continue to use here.
By day, I’m a working stiff like the rest of you. I’m blessed to have a great job in the communications field and go to work wondering if today is the day they’ll stop paying me for having so much fun on the job and ask me to pay them.
In the early hours of the day and late hours of the evening, I’m a sprint triathlete who dabbles in a bit of trail running, rock climbing, yoga, and other outdoor multisport activities…like the Mt. Taylor Winter Quad which thoroughly kicked my ass my first time out.
In addition, I’m what’s considered a non-traditional student: I’m going back to college as a pre-med student. I’m still trying to figure out what possessed me to do that, but it’s turning into one helluva ride.
I’m also married to a wonderful woman who has re-purposed her life and is now an elementary school teacher. We’re the proud parents of two young multisport athletes, one young multisport Labrador Retriever and one retired old something-or-another Heinz 57 dog.
The Outdoor Journey is for you. As I continue to learn more about this wonderful lifestyle, I will share the lessons I’ve learned as well as hope you’ll spend some time to share yours with me.
Find your edge and dance upon it,
hak
